What is Instagram engagement rate?

Engagement rate is a percentage metric that shows how interested an account's followers are in its content. Follower count alone doesn't tell you an account's value; what matters is how much those followers respond with likes and comments. An account with many followers but low engagement often points to an inflated or passive audience. That's why engagement rate is one of the first things agencies and brands check before a collaboration.

How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?

The most common formula divides a post's engagement by the account's follower count:

Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments) ÷ Followers × 100

A single post can be misleading, so an accurate result comes from an average of several posts. OneKind Stats averages this over the account's last 10 organic posts. To reflect real performance, two filters are applied:

Posts with hidden likes are also removed, so the rate relies only on measurable organic data.

What is a good engagement rate?

There's no fixed threshold because the rate varies with account size. Common ranges: for micro accounts (under 10K) 3%+ is strong; for 100K+ macro accounts 1–2% is normal. Rate naturally drops as an account grows because the share of passive followers rises. So the healthiest approach is to compare against accounts of a similar size in the same niche.
